Chris Newman is “in the virtuoso class” (The Guardian) and “one of the UK’s most staggering and influential acoustic guitarists” (fRoots). A prolific composer, arranger and record producer, he’s been involved in many different fields: folk (harper Máire Ní Chathasaigh and Boys of the Lough) His 1998 solo CD Fretwork was “Dazzling” Acoustic Guitar (USA) In Still Getting Away with It Chris has produced a masterwork of extraordinary breadth and depth. The album, at a little over an hour's duration, contains 18 tracks, 10 of which are original compositions. It’s a mixture of slow and pretty, fast and furious, folk and folk-rock, latin, Irish traditional, Québecois, old-time, swing and modern jazz, new tunes in a traditional style...all played in Chris’s own very distinctive way. The CD is a very personal statement and the notes read like a mini autobiography; the front cover features Chris as a five-year-old playing the guitar in his grandmother’s garden. Guesting are Arty McGlynn, Nollaig Casey, Simon Mayor, Paul Buckley, his brother Mark, Roy Whyke, Davy Stuart and of course, Máire Ní Chathasaigh. “Dazzling virtuosity... guitar-playing to be marvelled at” The Daily Telegraph Who played what?
